CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team hosts North Carolina and NC State in Memorial Gymnasium this weekend to begin a four-match homestand. The Cavaliers will face the Tar Heels on Friday and 7 p.m., before taking on the Wolfpack Saturday at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available for both matches.
The Cavaliers split their weekend competition earlier this season when they faced UNC and NC State. Despite falling behind 1-2 in the match at North Carolina, Virginia used a 25-23 victory in the fourth set to force a deciding game, in which it won 15-12 for the 3-2 match win. Fourth-year Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) blocked 10 attacks, while fifth-year Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) collected 15 kills and 13 digs. Third-year Brittani Rendina (Lisle, Ill.) picked up a match-high 28 digs.
Virginia struggled the next day against NC State in Raleigh, N.C., falling in four sets. The Cavaliers dropped the first set before winning the second, but the Wolfpack went on to win the next two to claim the victory, 3-1. The Pack are currerntly on a seven-match losing skid, but their last win came on Oct. 11 against Virginia. Arlee Tamietti leads the offense with 274 kills and 23 aces. Aiwane Iboaya is hitting a team-best .264 with 97 blocks.
The win over the Tar Heels improved the Cavaliers’ record against UNC to 14-33 all-time, while the loss to NC State snapped a streak of 25-straight wins against the Pack. Virginia dropped to 31-20 overall when facing NC State.
At home, Virginia holds a 7-15 record versus UNC, winning the last two, and the Cavaliers have won the last 12-straight against the Wolfpack. Virginia’s last loss to NC State in Charlottesville was in 1995.
Following the weekend, Virginia will host Maryland and Boston College on Fri., November 14 and Sat., November 15, respectively. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
