KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The No. 13 Virginia men’s swimming and diving team fell on the road to seventh-ranked Tennessee 172-128 Thursday at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in three events, including two distance freestyle races. Taylor Smith led the pack of swimmers in the 1000 free, finishing with a time of 9:17.41. John Snawerdt was second (9:19.47) and Garrett Wren placed third (9:27.24).
In the 500 free, second-year Matt McLean earned first-place honors, touching at 4:30.40. Smith finished second in the race with a mark of 4:30.62 and teammate Darren Ankosko placed third (4:31.07).
Virginia also finished 1-2-3 in the 200 fly, with fourth-year co-captain Lee Robertson leading the way in 1:49.23. Pat Reams placed second in a mark of 1:49.23 and Ian Vogt was third in 1:50.28.
Other event winners for the Cavaliers included Ryan Hurley in the 200 breast (2:00.80) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Scot Robison, McLean, Robertson and Tony Colella, who touched in 3:01.97.
Both the Virginia men’s and women’s squads are back in action at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Kentucky.
