CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia announces his team’s schedule for the upcoming season. The schedule features seven games against teams that saw postseason action in last year’s NCAA Championships, including both Division I finalists.
“Releasing our spring schedule always serves notice that the opening face-off is in the not-so-distant future,” Starsia said. “Adding four-time defending Ivy League champion Cornell to the 2009 slate only makes one of the nation’s most challenging schedules even tougher. For Virginia lacrosse fans, potential recruits and for our own players, the opportunity to play the best teams, in the best venues, as part of the most exciting regular season events is an exhilarating prospect. After having broken the Klckner Stadium attendance record twice in 2008, we are proud to be part of such a strong local lacrosse community. The 2009 season promises to be another thrill ride!”
The Cavaliers start the season on Feb. 14 with a home game vs. Drexel, the eighth year in a row Virginia has opened its season against the Dragons. Virginia hosts Bryant on Feb. 16 in the first meeting of the two schools as Bryant moves up to Division I this season.
Virginia hits the road for three of its next four games beginning with a trip to Long Island to face Stony Brook on Feb. 21. Three days later UVa hosts Mount St. Mary’s at 7 p.m.
The Cavaliers travel to the Carrier Dome for the first time since 2005 to face reigning national champion Syracuse on Friday (Feb. 27) at 7:30 p.m. They follow that with a contest at VMI on March 3.
The Cornell Big Red come to Charlottesville on March 8 to play Virginia during the regular season for the first time since 1971. The Cavaliers defeated the Big Red 11-10 in the quarterfinals of the 2002 NCAA Tournament the last time the two teams met.
The Cavaliers remain at home for the next two contestsa March 10 match-up against Vermont, coached by former UVa All-American defenseman Ryan Curtis, and against Towson on March 14.
NCAA finalist Johns Hopkins hosts the Cavaliers at 8 p.m. on March 21, the 62nd season in a row the teams have played each other.
UVa opens ACC play at home on March 28 against Maryland. A week later, Virginia faces North Carolina at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. The Cavaliers travel to Duke to face the Blue Devils on Aprill 11 and conclude the regular season at home against Dartmouth on April 18.
North Carolina hosts the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Fetzer Field on April 24 and 26.
Tickets will go on sale in December.
