Wright, Mohammed Lead Women’s Basketball to Exhibition Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Led by 27-point performances from Monica Wright and Aisha Mohammed, the No. 15 Virginia women’s basketball team posted a 91-77 win over DT3 in exhibition action Friday night at John Paul Jones Arena. Wright finished with a double-double after adding a game-high 10 rebounds. She also chipped in six assists.

Using a strong transition game which led to several fast-break opportunities, Virginia shot 65.7 percent from the field and 51.4 percent for the game. The Cavaliers trailed, 35-34, at halftime, but got out quickly in the second half with a 14-5 run over the first five minutes to open a 49-40 lead. DT3 got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Mohammed went 13-for-17 from the field and scored 16 of her points in the second half on 8-of-9 shooting. Enonge Stovall added nine points and five rebounds.

Four Virginia freshmen saw their first college playing time. Whitny Edwards had seven points, while Chelsea Shine scored six, Ariana Moore three and Britny Edwards two. All four earned at least 10 minutes of action.

Kalika France led DT3 with 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while Jasmine Byrd added 18 points. DT3 shot 48.3 percent for the game and was out-rebounded, 42-36.

Virginia begins the regular season at 7 p.m. next Friday at home against High Point.
