CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia women’s soccer team will host first and second round play of the 2008 NCAA Tournament this weekend at Klckner Stadium. Virginia, the No. 2 seed in the UCLA quadrant of the bracket, will play Army in a first round game Friday at 5 p.m. Princeton will play West Virginia in the other first round game at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The winners will meet at noon on Sunday.
“The most important thing for us is that we are home this weekend,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We are always confident when we play at home and we have had a lot of success at Klckner. We still have some things we must do to prepare, but we can’t wait for Friday to come.”
This season marks the 12th time in the past 15 years that the Cavaliers have hosted NCAA Tournament play at Klckner Stadium. Overall, Virginia has a 12-8-3 record in home NCAA Tournament games.
Virginia is making its 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 21st overall appearance. Only North Carolina and Notre Dame have longer active streaks of tournament appearances. Last year Virginia won first and second round games at Klckner Stadium over Loyola (Md.) and William & Mary before falling in overtime at No. 1 UCLA in the round of 16.
The Cavaliers enter the tournament as an at-large selection with a 13-4-3 overall record. Last week they made it to the ACC semifinals before losing to Virginia Tech in penalty kicks. Army is 12-5-3 this season and secured their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid by winning the Patriot League Tournament Sunday with a 1-0 double overtime win over Navy. Princeton has a 12-2-2 record and was an at-large selection after tying Harvard for the Ivy League crown. West Virginia is 13-2-6 this season and reached the Big East semifinals before falling in penalty kicks to Connecticut.
Tickets for each round are $9 for reserved seats, $7 for adult general admission, and $5 for youth/student general admission.
