CARY, N.C. The fourth-seeded Virginia men’s soccer team continues its run at the 2008 ACC Tournament on Friday, when it takes on No. 1 seed Wake Forest. Virginia (10-7-1) defeated the No. 5 seed, Duke, in quarterfinal action on Wednesday night. Freshman Brian Ownby came up with two second-half goals that were the difference in the game as UVa prevailed, 4-2. Ownby, a member of the All-ACC Freshman team announced on Tuesday, has tallied five goals on the year.
Wake Forest (18-0-1) defeated its quarterfinal opponent, No. 8 seed NC State, 4-1 on Wednesday. The Demon Deacons fell into a 1-0 hole, but rallied with four unanswered goals for the victory.
Virginia holds a 30-6-5 advantage in the all-time series with Wake Forest, but dropped the regular-season meeting on Nov. 7 at Klckner Stadium, 2-0. In meetings between the teams at the ACC Tournament, Virginia holds a 9-0-2 advantage. The last meeting at the conference tournament was in 2006, when Wake Forest advanced on penalty kicks after a scoreless tie in the semifinals.
Should Virginia be victorious, it would advance to the ACC Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net.
