CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team extended its winning streak Saturday evening with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-18) win over Boston College in Memorial Gymnasium. The win completes the season sweep over the Eagles for the Cavaliers and improves their record to 16-13 on the season and 8-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Boston College falls to 7-22 and 1-16 in the league.
Fifth-year Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Cavaliers’ attack for the third-straight match, knocking down 12 kills. Third-year Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) contributed eight.
Third-year Brittani Rendina (Lisle, Ill) led the defense with 15 digs and fourth-year Shannon Davis (Austin, Texas) blocked five attacks.
Second-year Kelly Irvin (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) dished out 15 assists, while fourth-year Marlow Bruneau (Lakeville, Minn.) handed out 12.
As a team, the Cavaliers landed a season-high 10 service aces, led by a career-high from Shelton.
For Boston College, Tsvetelina Dureva led the attack with 11 kills and Dani Moskitis dished out 21 assists.
Virginia’s defense carried the Cavaliers through the first set with four blocks and 14 digs, while holding the Eagles to a -.094 attack percentage. The Cavaliers forced Boston College to make a total of 10 attack errors, enabling Virginia to take an early lead and go on to capture a 25-14 victory.
Boston College began the second set with a 4-0 run, before the Cavaliers pulled together and went on a run of their own to tie the score at nine all. Virginia then took the lead, which they maintained until for the remainder of the set, winning 25-19.
After a tied score at eight all in the third set, Virginia pulled ahead 20-13 forcing Boston College to call a timeout. The Cavaliers kept their lead before a block by first-years Hillary Trebels (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Tess Udall (Boulder, Colo.) brought the fans to their feet. Udall then secured the 25-18 win with a kill.
Virginia will return to action next weekend, heading on the road for its final away matches. The Cavaliers will face Wake Forest on Friday, Nov. 21 before heading to Durham, N.C., to take on the Blue Devils on Saturday, Nov. 22. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
