CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each got wins over Florida State and Penn State in a two-day double dual meet that concluded Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The Cavalier women defeated FloridaState 216-129 and PennState 201-148. The men, meanwhile, beat the Seminoles 197-154 and the Nittany Lions 228-120.
“It’s great to compete with such outstanding teams,” Virginia head coach Mark Bernardino said. “Both FSU and PSU have outstanding histories and traditions in swimming. Both school have great coaching staffs and great athletes. Obviously it helped us to be at home.”
The women’s 200 medley relay team of Mei Christensen, Katherine McDonnell, Liz Shaw and Kristen Wallace finished first a time of 1:42.21.
Lauren Smart took home top honors in the 100 fly in a winning time of 55.08 with Shaw finishing second (55.33). Other event winners for Virginia included Jen Narum in the 1000 free (9:52.28) and Christensen in the 100 back (54.59).
The men’s 200 medley relay team also recorded a first-place finish. David Wren, Ryan Hurley, Lee Robertson and Peter Geissinger teamed up to finish in 1:32.01, out-touching second-place FloridaState, who finished in 1:32.32.
The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the 100 fly, with Robison, a second-year leading the way. He finished with a time of 48.76. Robertson was second (48.88) and Pat Reams placed third (49.40).
Scot Robison and Lee Roberston took first and second, respectively, in the 50 free. Robison finished in 20.55 while Robertson touching at 20.86. PennState’s Brian Alen also finished in 20.86 to tie with Robertson. Virginia also went 1-2 in the 200 breast, led by Hurley’s winning time of 2:00.24. Teammate Tim Hayes was second, finishing with a mark of 2:02.97.
Additionally, Mellors claimed the 400 IM in 3:57.81 while Hayes placed second with a mark of 3:58.30.
Both squads are back in action Dec. 4-6 when the Cavaliers play host to the UVa Invitational.
