Scot Robison and the Virginia swimming and diving teams are coming off wins over Penn State and Florida State at home last weekend. After taking this week and next week off, both the men’s and women’s team return home Dec. 4-6 with the UVa Invitational at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. Robison, named this week as the ACC Performer of the Week, recently sat down with VirginiaSports.com to talk about his challenges as a sprint freestyler, his experience last season as a first-year and what he likes to do for fun.
Question: Were you happy with the performances last weekend against Penn State/Florida State?
Robison: I was very happy with my times from the weekend, especially my 100 free. I also got to swim the 100 fly for the first time this year which was fun.
Question: What is the most challenging part of being a sprint freestyler?
Robison: For me, sprinting requires a lot of focus. That is probably the most challenging thing in my opinion – to consistently have a really high level of focus before and during my races. It only takes one small mistake for a great race to turn into a mediocre one.
Question: What is your favorite event to swim?
Robison: I like all of the races that I swim. I have a different favorite every meet.
Question: Last year was a successful year for you even though it was just your first year. Was it hard to transition from high school to a college program?
Robison: It was really difficult. The level of training and the consistency at which it is done was something I’d never experienced in high school.
Question: What is your favorite memory from last season?
Robison: Winning the first event of the ACC Championships – the 200 medley relay – with two fourth-years (PJ Sullivan and Bryan Stahl). It was the most exciting race I’ve been a part of…so far.
Question: When did you first start swimming?
Robison: I first started swimming when I was 8. I guess I just liked it because it was something I was good at.
Question: What do you like to do for fun?
Robison: I love the outdoors. I like to go backpacking with friends and family when I have breaks from swimming.
Question: What is your major and do you have any future career aspirations?
Robison: I am planning on being an environmental science major. I don’t know what I want to do, but hopefully something that allows me to work outdoors.
Question: What is your favorite spot on Grounds?
Robison: The Rotunda.
