MAUI, HawaiiThe Virginia men’s basketball team is in the field for the 2010 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. Joining the Cavaliers in the tournament field in 2010 are Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Washington, Wichita State and host Chaminade.
The tournament is held at the Lahaina Civic Center during Thanksgiving week.
It will be Virginia’s fourth appearance in the tournament. The Cavaliers have compiled a 5-3 overall record in the tournament and reached the championship game in their two most recent appearances. In 2002, Virginia defeated Chaminade (86-72) and Kentucky (75-61) before losing to Indiana (70-63) in the championship game. The Cavaliers defeated South Carolina (93-70) and Massachusetts (75-68) to advance to the 1996 championship game where they lost to Kansas (80-63).
Virginia also participated in the inaugural tournament in 1984 when it was called the Hawaiian Airlines Silversword Invitational and was held in Kona on the island of Hawaii. The Cavaliers lost to Providence (75-71 in overtime) and defeated Davidson (69-65) in 1984.
EA SPORTS is in its eighth year as title sponsor of the tournament.
