NORFOLK, Va. No. 11 Virginia fell at No. 25 Old Dominion, 78-70, Friday night in women’s basketball action. Monica Wright led the Cavaliers with 23 points, while Chelsea Shine added a career-high 16 points.
Virginia (2-1) trailed most of the first half, and Jazzmin Walters (11 points) and Jessica Canady (nine points) led the Lady Monarchs to a 33-25 halftime lead over the Cavaliers.
Monica Wright made a jumper in transition with 1:25 left in the game to cut the Old Dominion lead to three points, 71-68, but the Cavaliers would get no closer. The Lady Monarchs converted free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 78-70 victory.
With the win, Old Dominion (3-1) extended the nation’s second-longest home winning streak by winning its 27th-straight game in the Constant Convocation Center. The Lady Monarchs were led by Jazzmin Walters with 24 points and Tiffany Green with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
For Virginia, Aisha Mohammed scored 15 points and had four rebounds.
Up next for Virginia is a Monday, Nov. 24, contest against Colorado. Tip-off from John Paul Jones Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live over the internet by ACC Select.
