CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Three different Cavaliers had double-doubles and the 11th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team defeated Colorado, 77-43, Monday night in John Paul Jones Arena.
Chelsea Shine led all scorers with 15 points, while Whitny Edwards (14 points, 11 rebounds), Monica Wright (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Aisha Mohammed (10 points, 14 rebounds) all tallied double-doubles.
The Cavaliers (3-1) jumped out to a 15-5 lead and never looked back, taking a 30-20 halftime lead.
Colorado (2-1) cut the UVa lead to eight points on two free throws by Brittany Spears, 33-25, with 16:19 left in the game, but Virginia countered with a 6-0 run over the next minute to take a 39-25 lead on a jumper by Chelsea Shine.
From there, Virginia built on its lead throughout the second half and won by a final score of 77-43. Shine shot 6-for-11 from the field for 15 points, and added five rebounds and two blocks. Wright, meanwhile, tallied her first double-double of the season and sixth of her career with 11 points and a season-high 10 rebounds.
Mohammed was a force in the paint, hauling down a season-high 14 rebounds to go with 10 points and two blocks.
On deck for Virginia is three games at the WBCA Classic in Milwaukee, Wis. The Cavaliers are set to face Utah (Nov. 28), host Marquette (Nov. 29) and Gonzaga (Nov. 30).
