GREENSBORO, N.C.Virginia freshman guard Sylven Landesberg (Flushing, N.Y.) is the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week. Landesberg was honored for his play in Virginia’s victories over the University of South Florida and Radford University last week.
Landesberg is the first player to earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors the first two weeks of a season since Georgia Tech’s Chris Bosh in 2002-03.
Landesberg scored the points that put Virginia ahead for good in the closing seconds of both games last week. He is the first Virginia freshman to score at least 20 points in his first three collegiate games.
In UVa’s two games last week, Landesberg scored 43 points and had eight rebounds. He made 17-30 (56.6 percent) shots from the field, including 2-4 from three-point range, and 7-10 free throw attempts.
In Virginia’s 77-75 victory over USF on Nov. 19 at John Paul Jones Arena, Landesberg scored a team-high 21 points and had four rebounds. He was 8-15 (53.5 percent) from the field, including 1-2 from three-point range, and 4-6 from the free throw line. Landesberg’s layup with 13 seconds left in the game put the Cavaliers ahead to stay at 76-75 and his free throw with seven seconds remaining gave Virginia its final margin of victory.
In the Cavaliers’ 68-66 win over Radford on Nov. 21 at John Paul Jones Arena, Landesberg scored a game-high 22 points and had four rebounds. He was 9-15 from the field, including 1-2 from three-point range, and 3-4 from the free throw line. Landesberg made two free throws with 29 seconds remaining to play to put the Cavaliers ahead to stay at 67-66.
