CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team concludes its season this Friday at home hosting Virginia Tech in the season finale. The Cavaliers (16-15, 8-11 ACC) and Hokies (20-10, 11-8 ACC) enter the match after each dropping the last two matches and will face at 6 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium. The match will be broadcast live on ACC Select.
Prior to the opening serve, Virginia’s seniors Marlow Bruneau, Shannon Davis and Beth Shelton will be honored with a ceremony, as it will be their last match in a Virginia uniform.
Twelve Cavaliers have tallied kills for Virginia this season, including five who have reached the 200-kill plateau. Third-year Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) heads the group with 293 kills and has landed a team-high 36 aces.
Defensively, third-year Brittani Rendina (Lisle, Ill.) has collected a 491 digs and second-year Sydney Hill (Kalamazoo, Mich.) leads the charge at the net with 126 blocks. Each of them have made their way into Virginia’s respective single season record categories with their season totals so far.
Fourth-year Marlow Bruneau (Lakeville, Minn.) has dished out a team-high 669 assists, while second-year Kelly Irvin (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) has distributed 434.
Virginia Tech has dropped its last two contests, but are led by Felicia Willoughby who has landed 311 kills. Jill Gergen has 406 digs on the season, while Erin Leaser has dished out 1,032 assists.
Virginia leads the all-time series 28-23, winning 13 of the last 17 meetings. Virginia Tech holds the first seven victories in a series that dates back to 1979, and won 11 of the first 12 meetings. In Charlottesville, the Cavaliers are 16-6 and have won the last 11 meetings. The last time the Hokies defeated Virginia in Memorial Gymnasium was on Sept. 1, 1992.
