TROY, N.Y. The No. 24 Virginia wrestling team wrapped up its November schedule Saturday by going 2-1 at the Journeymen/Brute Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y. UVa defeated Harvard (36-11) and Bucknell (30-11) and lost to No. 7 Oklahoma State (33-7).
Chris Henrich (So., Lansdale, Pa.) continued his great start to the 2008-09 season by posting three wins at 174 pounds as he ran his record to 12-0. Henrich earned an 11-5 decision over Oklahoma State’s Kevin Wainscott, a technical fall over Harvard’s Patrick Ziemnik and a 3-1 decision over Bucknell’s Shane Riccio, who was an NCAA qualifier last year.
Brent Jones (Jr., Burke, Va.) recorded falls against Harvard and Bucknell, giving him 26 career falls as he moved into a tie for third place on the all-time UVa falls ledger. He shares the position with Bob Seidel (1998-2003) and needs two to reach second place. Matt Bonson (Fr., Lewistown, Pa.), Jack Danilkowicz (Jr., Green Oaks, Ill.) and Ross Gitomer (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) also racked up two wins apiece Saturday.
“The highlight of the Oklahoma State match was redshirt freshman Matt Bonson beating No. 11-ranked Tyler Shinn,” Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. “Other than that however the dual was pretty one sided, but we bounced back tough and defeated two very solid teams in Bucknell and Harvard. Our kids have been going hard and need a break, both physically and mentally. Now is the perfect time for it.”
Virginia (4-4) opened the day by absorbing a 33-7 loss to Oklahoma State. UVa got wins from Henrich as well as Bonson, who posted a 14-6 major decision over 11th-ranked Tyler Shinn. It marked the lone UVa win over the six ranked wrestlers in the Cowboys’ lineup.
Virginia rebounded to dominate Harvard in the second match. The Cavaliers won seven of the 10 weight classes and scored bonus points in all but one of their wins against the Crimson, which was receiving votes in the latest InterMat team rankings. UVa jumped out to an 18-0 lead, thanks to two forfeits, with a Bonson pin of Johnny Motley sandwiched in between.
The Cavaliers finished the day with a 30-11 win over Bucknell, with UVa prevailing in seven of 10 classes. The match was close through 165 pounds before the Cavaliers took the last four matches to win convincingly.
Virginia now is off for a month from team competition with its next tournament coming Dec. 29-30 at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. The Cavaliers’ next dual matches will be Jan. 9-10 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton.
