CARY, N.C. — The Virginia women’s soccer team opens postseason play Wednesday as the 2008 ACC Tournament begins at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The third-seeded Cavaliers play sixth-seeded Wake Forest in the final quarterfinal on Wednesday with game-time slated at 7:30 p.m. The game will also be broadcast for free online by ACC Select.
The game will be a rematch of the regular season finale for both teams, a game won by Wake Forest 1-0 Sunday at Klckner Stadium. It will also mark the third time in the past four years that Virginia and Wake Forest have met in the ACC Quarterfinals. Virginia won in 2005 and Wake Forest won in 2006, both by 2-1 scores and both in Cary.
The Cavaliers are led by five All-ACC selections, highlighted by ACC Defensive Player of the Year Nikki Krzysik. Krzysik was joined on the first team by Sinead Farrelly, while Lauren Alwine, Meghan Lenczyk and Alex Singer were named to the second team.
Wednesday’s quarterfinal schedule begins at noon with No. 1 seed North Carolina vs. No. 8 seed Miami. No. 4 seed Boston College and No. 5 seed Duke are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. No. 2 seed Florida State and No. 7 seed Virginia Tech will play at 5 p.m. with the Virginia-Wake Forest game to conclude the day’s action. The tournament continues with semifinals on Friday and concludes with Sunday’s championship game.
