First-year forward Chelsea Shine recently checked in with VirginiaSports.com to talk about the team’s road trip to Milwaukee for the WBCA Classic and its upcoming games at Illinois (Thursday at 8:30 p.m.) and home against East Carolina (Saturday at 2 p.m.).
Question: What is the biggest difference between high school basketball and college basketball?
Shine: The speed and physicality of the game.
Question: What is your most memorable moment from this season so far?
Shine: Beating Tennessee!
Question: If you could take any two attributes from two people on your team, what would you take and from whom?
Shine: I would take Enong Stovall’s confidence and Monica Wright’s shooting.
Question: Looking forward to the game at Illinois, how has this week’s preparation been?
Shine: It’s good, we have just been focusing on the scouting report that Coach Elderkin and Coach Loyd put together. Especially because we are coming off of a loss to Gonzaga, we just have to be ready to come out full throttle.
Question: How was the team’s trip to Milwaukee over Thanksgiving?
Shine: It was fun. We got in Wednesday and we got some down time to ourselves. Thursday we had a really nice team Thanksgiving dinner at the hotel. We got to see a little bit of the city of Milwaukee, but then it was time play. Our first two games were awesome, and it was exciting to play in front of big crowds, especially when we played Marquette.
Question: What is a game or trip you are looking forward to this season?
Shine: I’m really looking forward to the Cavalier Classic (Dec. 28-29, 2008) at John Paul Jones Arena.
Question: What is the best part about playing basketball at Virginia?
Shine: John Paul Jones Arena!
Question: Who is a player that will surprise people this year?
Shine: Ariana Moorer.
Question: Who is your favorite athlete at UVa?
Shine: Maurice Covington (football).
Question: What is your favorite sport other than basketball?
Shine: Football.
Question: What is your major and/or career plans?
Shine: I am undecided on a major right now, but I would like to go into communications.
Question: Describe the gameday atmosphere at JPJA.
Shine: Loud, wild, crazy, exciting!
