Virginia softball coach Eileen Schmidt and the Cavaliers open the 2009 campaign Feb. 7 at the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C. Schmidt, now in her second season, recently sat down with VirginiaSports.com for a fun holiday question-and-answer session.
Question: Do you prefer wrapping paper or gift bags?
Schmidt: Paper. It is hard to shake a bag and figure out what is inside.
Question: Real tree or artificial?
Schmidt: Are you kidding, I grew up in the woods. You have to go REAL.
Question: Do you like eggnog?
Schmidt: Is the Pope catholic?
Question: What is your favorite gift you received as a child?
Schmidt: You know those things you sit on and bounce up and down, I got one of those and it was Mickey Mouse so the ears were the handles. It was great, bounced all over the house and outside. Wait, maybe that was a hand me down from my sisters. Hmmmm, talk about re-gifting.
Question: Do you mail or email Christmas cards?
Schmidt: Everyone loves to open up “good” snail mail at Christmas!
Question: What is your favorite Christmas movie?
Schimdt: That old school claymation cartoon, “The Year Without a Santa Clause.” Who doesn’t secretly like the Heat Miser and the Snow Miser? Or by default, “A Christmas Story.”
Question: When do you start shopping?
Schmidt: I have only participated in Black Friday one time and that was enough to keep me on my normal schedule of the week before Christmas.
Question: What is your favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
Schmidt: Leg of lamb, brussel sprouts, oyster stuffing and apple pie.
Question: Do you have a favorite Christmas song?
Schmidt: That’s a tough-y. Away in a Manger? God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen? It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, maybe?
Question: Can you name all of Santa’s reindeers?
Schmidt: Challenge me. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen….AND KARLA!
Question: Angel or star on the top of your tree?
Schmidt: Angel – but when I was growing up our tree was always too tall and she kind of leaned to the side.
Question: Do you open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
Schmidt: Morning! Eve is for peaking.
Question: What would you say is the most annoying thing about this time of the year?
Schmidt: Impatience and when it does not snow.
Question: What is the best part about Christmas?
Schmidt: Getting to spend time with your family and friends. It is also means the season is just around the corner! GO ‘HOOS!!!!!!!
