CHARLOTTESVILLE Monica Wright scored 22 points and Lyndra Littles added 21 to lead No. 15 Virginia to an 83-38 victory over visiting Rider Sunday on the opening day of the Marriott Cavalier Classic at John Paul Jones Arena.
In the first game of the Marriott Cavalier Classic, Louisiana Tech defeated UMBC, 83-62. UMBC and Rider will face each other Monday at 4:30 p.m. in the consolation game, followed by the championship game (UVa vs. Louisiana Tech) at 7 p.m.
“We had a fairly good start,” Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan said. “I felt like we were well-prepared. We created some separation early, and I was able to play a lot of people.”
Wright’s performance was her seventh-straight 20+ point outing, and she also tallied six steals. Littles, meanwhile, had a season-best 21 points to go with six rebounds.
Virginia (10-2) remained undefeated at home this season (6-0).
The Cavaliers never trailed, building a 48-19 halftime lead behind the strength of 16 first-half points from Littles and 12 from Wright.
UVa led by as many as 49 points in the second half, getting strong contributions from the freshmen trio of Whitny Edwards (12 points, five rebounds), Chelsea Shine (11 points, five rebounds) and Ariana Moorer (seven points, six rebounds).
Britnee Millner finished with four points, three assists, a block and a steal, while Enonge Stovall added six points, six rebounds and two steals.
Rider (2-8) was led by Amanda Sepulveda with 14 points and Tammy Meyers with nine points and seven rebounds.
Virginia finished 25-for-37 from the free throw line, a season-high, and tied a season-high for points with 83.
