Briggs Wins ACC Title in Javelin

ATLANTA, Ga. Sophomore Meghan Briggs threw a personal-best 49.67m in the javelin in the opening day of the 2008 ACC Championships to win the conference title and set an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the event. Her throw was six-meters longer than the second-place finisher, picking up 10 points for the women’s team.
Senior All-American Emily Harrison earned All-ACC honors in the 10000m run with her runner-up finish in an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 34:47.02. Fellow senior All-American Katie Read finished seventh in the event in 35:48.69 to help anchor the women’s squad to 20 points, taking second-place heading into the second day of competition.
The men’s side finished the opening day in sixth with 12 points, thanks to a trio of runners placing in the 10000m run. Sophomore Trey Miller led the pack with a fourth place finish in 30:48.45. Senior Ryan Foster followed Miller across the line in 30:55.76 and senior Taylor Smith finished sixth in 30:57.42.
For the day, senior David Lewis got the Cavaliers started on a strong note posting personal-bests across the board in the opening events of the decathlon. He opened with a third place finish in both the 100m dash and the long jump, with a time of 11.30 and a leap of 6.44m, respectively.
He went on to win the shot put with a throw of 13.11m and took fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.83m. He concluded the opening day events with a 49.44 second-place finish in the 400-meters. He currently sits third with 3641 points. Clemson’s Miller Moss leads the event at 3790.
Freshman Katie Trizna, also competing in the multis, cleared a personal-best height of 1.63 in the high jump for a fifth place finish. She has collected 2694 points in the first day of heptathlon events.
