CHARLOTTESVILLE – Randy Bungard has resigned as the director of track and field and cross country and head coach of the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Virginia. UVa Athletics Director Craig Littlepage announced Bungard’s resignation on Thursday (July 24).

“Randy has overseen the growth in our track and field and cross country programs during his 11 years at Virginia,” Littlepage said. “His hard work is appreciated and I’m sure I speak for the entire athletics department when I wish him the best of luck as he pursues new opportunities. He’s put our programs in good shape.”

Bungard was named head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs at Virginia in 1997.

“There comes a time when change is good,” Bungard said. “I have reached that time. I love the University of Virginia and my time here has been the most rewarding professional experience of my life. The student-athletes, coaches, administrators and all of the support staff have been wonderful. I feel good about the state of the program and believe it is primed to move to the next level.”

Since 1997, Virginia’s track and field and cross country programs have produced 33 All-Americans, two USATF national champions, 53 NCAA qualifiers, 38 Atlantic Coast Conference champions and 180 All-ACC performers. While 34 school records have been established during Bungard’s tenure, the Cavaliers have also excelled in the classroom. The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has recognized 19 of Bungard’s squads as All-Academic Teams.

Bungard was named the Southeast Region and ACC Coach of the Year for men’s track and field in 2001. During the 2006-07 academic year, Virginia was represented at the NCAA Championships in men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. UVa athletes earned 10 All-America and 17 All-ACC honors that year.

Virginia won the ACC men’s cross country championship in 2005 and 2007.

Bungard also served as an assistant track and field coach at Virginia from 1993-95.
