CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis team remained undefeated on the season (4-0) with a pair of Sunday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers topped No. 30 Notre Dame 7-0 in the afternoon and defeated Belmont 5-2 in the evening.
“It was a good day of tennis for us,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “I thought we played extremely well against Notre Dame. We came out and had great focus and executed all the way through. Against Belmont, it was a great opportunity to get Reese Milner and David Nguyen their first taste of dual match tennis. Overall it was a great day and great weekend for us.”
Virginia opened the match by sweeping the doubles contests. Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Lee Singer (Laguna, Niguel, Calif.) got Virginia on the board with an 8-2 win over Niall Fitzgerald and Matt Johnson at No. 3 doubles. Third-ranked Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) clinched the opening point as they topped No. 37 Brett Helgeson and Tyler Davis 8-4 at the No. 1 position. Dominic Inglot (London, England) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) completed the sweep with a tiebreaker win at No. 2 over Stephen Havens and Casey Watt.
In singles, the Cavaliers quickly won three matches to seal the dual match win. Singh cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Havens at No. 2 singles. Shabaz followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Daniel Stahl at the No. 3 position. Singer provided the clinching point with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Fitzgerald at No. 5 singles. Courtney added a 6-4, 6-2 win over David Anderson at No. 6 singles and Barrick defeated Watt 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to make the score 6-0. No. 43 ranked Inglot completed the sweep with a superbreaker victory over No. 20 Helgeson, his second consecutive victory over a top-25 ranked player.
Against Belmont, the Cavaliers swept the doubles before winning four of six singles matches. Shabaz, Singh and Barrick each won their second match of the day and David Nguyen (Columbia, Md.) won in his dual match debut.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend as they host an ITA National Indoor Qualifying tournament. Virginia meets Arkansas at 6 p.m. on Friday after East Tennessee State and Wisconsin play at 2 p.m. The winners meet at 6 p.m. on Saturday with a consolation match at 2 p.m.
