Prelims: Day Four at ACCs

COLLEGE PARK, Md. Senior Pat Reams and sophomore Scot Robison won their respective events, setting ACC meet records along the way, to lead Virginia during the final day of preliminary events at the 2009 ACC Championships at Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center.
Robison turned in a 42.94 performance in the 100-yard freestyle to better the ACC meet, Virginia and overall conference record Saturday morning. It improved on his previous NCAA-B standard mark of 43.36.
Reams topped the 200 Butterfly field with his ACC meet best time of 1:43.51. The 2008 ACC Champion in the event, his performance bettered his previous best result in the event by more than one second.
Ryan Hurley became the third Cavalier to turn in a top time during Saturday’s prelims when he swam the 200 Breastsroke in 1:55.77. That was a career-best time and improved his NCAA-B qualifying mark.
The Cavaliers dominated the 200 Breaststroke with three other competitors joining Hurley in the finals. John Azar (1:57.6) and Ian Vogt (1:57.65) both turned in season-best times to meet the NCAA-B standard. Timothy Hayes was seventh at 1:58.63.
Vogt also qualified for the 200 Fly final with his NCAA-B mark of 1:46.26 that was the fifth best time. Lee Robertson joins Vogt and Reams in the evening’s finals after qualifying with the day’s third best time at 1:44.52, also an NCAA-B standard.
UVa placed a pair of performers in the 200 Backstroke final. David Wren had the day’s third best prelim time at 1:43.60 and Eric Olesen was sixth best at 1:44.03. Both times bettered the NCAA-B standard. Both times were career bests.
Freshman Peter Geissinger joins Robison in the 100 Free final after finishing sixth at 43.83, a career-best time in the event.
Virginia enters the final session of the meet in first place overall with 284 points, a 139-point margin over Florida State and Georgia Tech.
