CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The No. 8 Virginia baseball team scored nine runs in the first three innings and cruised from there in a 13-4 win over Towson Tuesday at Davenport Field.
Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.) went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead Virginia’s 14-hit night. Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.), Steven Kouril (Fr., Arlington, Va) and Corey Hunt (R-So., Charlottesville, Va.) each had a pair of hits. Kouril, in his first career start, also scored three times, as did Parker.
Robert Poutier (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) earned the win for Virginia after starting and pitching five innings, allowing three earned runs, six hits and two walks. Poutier (1-0) also struck out six. Jeff Randolph (0-2) took the loss for Towson and allowed seven earned runs, six hits and two walks in one-plus inning of work.
UVa (20-2) scored first with a run in the first inning. Parker led off with a single and moved to third on a well-executed hit-and-run single by Gosselin. Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) then grounded into a double play, with Parker scoring on the play.
Virginia then sent 10 batters to the plate and rolled up seven runs in the second inning in the Cavaliers’ largest scoring inning of the year. The first seven batters reached base and scored. UVa loaded the bases with no out before Hunt singled to plate two. Two batters later, with the bases again loaded, Gosselin doubled to left-center to clear the bases and give UVa a 6-0 lead. Hultzen then doubled to score Gosselin and he scored two batters later when Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Cavaliers tacked on a run in the third inning when Gosselin hit his second straight double with this one scoring Kouril.
Towson (12-11) got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning. Gary Helmick led off with a triple and scored when Kevin Collins followed with a double. He then came home when Matt Collins singled.
The Tigers added a run in the fifth inning on a Kevin Collins groundout to score Helmick, who tripled with one out. Towson brought a run home in the seventh on a Jason Stifler single.
Virginia posted four more runs in the eighth inning. Kouril scored on a wild pitch and Parker brought the second run home with a single. Jared King (Fr., Radford, Va.) hit a double down the left-field line to score two runs for the final margin of 13-4.
The Cavaliers and Tigers conclude their two-game midweek series at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
