CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Robert Poutier (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) and Andrew Carraway (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) have been named captains of the 2009 Virginia baseball team. The captains were nominated by members of the UVa team and then appointed by head coach Brian O’Connor.

“Both of these players epitomize what a Virginia Baseball player stands for,” O’Connor said. “Both have excelled in the classroom and have been leaders for our team during their careers. They will do a great job as team captains. Our program is fortunate to have such great leaders.”

Poutier, a right-handed pitcher, is serving his second straight year as team captain. A fifth-year senior who already has earned his bachelor’s degree and is working on a master’s degree, Poutier owns an 8-1 career record with a 2.67 earned run average. Batters have hit just .208 against him in his career.

Carraway, a right-handed pitcher, went 4-3 with a 4.06 ERA last season while competing for most of the season in the Cavaliers’ weekend rotation. A three-time All-ACC Academic team honoree, he boasts an 11-3 career record with a 3.67 ERA.

The senior captains will be especially vital this year, with the Cavaliers featuring a young team that includes 22 underclassmen. Virginia returns 19 letterwinners from the 2008 team which went 39-23 while reaching the ACC Championship Game and earning the program’s fifth straight bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Cavaliers start the 2009 campaign Feb. 20 at home against Bucknell.
