CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia baseball team continues its 11-game season-opening homestand at 4 p.m. Tuesday when it takes on William and Mary at Davenport Field. Live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
The Cavaliers (4-0) started the season on a strong note last weekend by sweeping Bucknell in a four-game home series. Virginia’s pitching was stellar, allowing just two runs and 20 hits while recording a miniscule 0.25 ERA. The Cavaliers posted two shutouts, matching their entire total from 2008.
The offense did its share as well. Virginia batters combined to hit .358 with 19 extra-base hits, including an ACC-best six home runs. Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) and Franco Valdes (Jr., Miami, Fla.) each had two homers for the Cavaliers, while Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.) had three doubles, two triples and his first career long ball. The Cavaliers consistently put the ball in play and had just five strikeouts in 32 innings.
William & Mary went 3-1 in its opening weekend at home. The Tribe earned two wins over Iona (16-6, 18-4) and split a pair of games with Buffalo, winning the first, 10-9, before suffering a 4-2 loss in the second game. The Tribe swung some hot bats, hitting .381 for the weekend. Rob Nickle went 8-for-17 (.471) with nine RBI in the four games.
Virginia freshman Will Roberts (Richmond, Va.) is slated to make his first college start on Tuesday. He is scheduled to be opposed by William & Mary sophomore RHP Tim Norton.
William & Mary and Virginia met last season in a tightly-contested game in Charlottesville, with the Tribe prevailing, 6-5. Virginia holds a 64-29-2 edge in the all-time series.
Virginia is next in action at 4 p.m. Friday, playing host to Fordham. The two teams, along with Delaware, will play a three-team round robin this weekend. Fordham and Delaware will play at noon Friday. Saturday, UVa will play Delaware at noon and Fordham at 3 p.m. Sunday, Fordham and Delaware will meet at 11 a.m., with UVa taking on Delaware at 3 p.m.
