Baseball Plays Three-Team Round Robin This Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia baseball team will play four games this weekend as it plays host to a three-team round robin at Davenport Field. Delaware and Fordham will join the Cavaliers, with each team playing two games against the other two squads. Live statistics for all six games will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
The weekend schedule:
Friday, 10:30 a.m. Delaware vs. Fordham
Friday, 2 p.m. Virginia vs. Fordham
Friday, 30 minutes following completion of 2 p.m. game Virginia vs. Delaware
Saturday, 3 p.m. Virginia vs. Fordham
Sunday, 11 a.m. Delaware vs. Fordham
Sunday, 3 p.m. Virginia vs. Delaware
Please note the time changes from the original schedule. Changes have been made to game times on Friday and Saturday because of a forecast for inclement weather. On Saturday, baseball parking will be available at the Emmet-Ivy Garage. Parking in the University Hall lots will be limited to those coming to the men’s basketball game vs. Wake Forest at 2 p.m. The promotion that enabled ticket holders for the Virginia men’s basketball game against Wake Forest to attend the Saturday baseball game against Fordham for free will be in effect for the rescheduled Virginia – Fordham game beginning at noon on Saturday. Fans who wish to take advantage of this offer are asked to show their men’s basketball ticket at the entrance to Davenport Field.
Virginia is 5-0 this season after an 11-1 win over William and Mary on Tuesday. Will Roberts (Fr., Richmond, Va.) was brilliant in his first college start, tossing five innings and allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out eight as he earned his first win. The Cavalier bullpen of Tyler Wilson (So., Midlothian, Va.), Kevin Arico (So., Flemington, N.J.), Sean Lucas (R-Fr., Fishkill, N.Y.) and Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) pitched four hitless innings to wrap up the game.
At the plate, Virginia racked up 13 hits. Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.) and Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.) each had two hits and three RBI. John Barr (So., Ivyland, Pa.) had two hits and scored three times, while Steven Proscia (Fr., Suffern, N.Y.) continued his strong start to the season with a 2-for-3 effort while scoring twice and driving in two.
Fordham went 1-2 last weekend in its season-opening series at Florida Atlantic. P.J. Como went 6-for-11 (.545) last weekend, while Bobby DiNardo supplied the power, going 5-for-11 with three home runs and two doubles. The teams last met in 2005 at Davenport Field with the Cavaliers winning two of three against the Rams. Robert Poutier (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) is the lone current Cavalier who was on the roster at the time, but he did not play in the series.
Delaware split a four-game series at Longwood last weekend, averaging more than 10 runs per game and batting .374. Chris Nehl led the team at the plate, going 10-for-18 (.556). Seven Blue Hens hit .357 or better in the four-game set. UVa and Delaware last met in 2007 in Charlottesville, with the Cavaliers sweeping a three-game series.
Virginia leads the all-time series with Fordham, 8-5, and Delaware, 7-2.
Virginia returns to Davenport Field for two midweek games next week. The Cavaliers will take on VMI at 4 p.m. Tuesday and George Washington at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
