CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia infielder Tyler Cannon (Jr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) has been named to the initial watch list for the 2009 Brooks Wallace Award.

For the first time since its creation in 2004, the Wallace Award will honor the country’s finest shortstop. Previously, the Wallace Award was given to the national player of the year.

Cannon is one of three ACC shortstops to make the watch list, joining Florida State’s Stephen Cardullo and Georgia Tech’s Derek Dietrich.

Cannon is having his best season as a Cavalier, hitting a career-best .348. He also has already set career highs in triples (3) and stolen bases (15). He has matched or is nearing career highs in nearly every other offensive category.

He has played shortstop in 44 of Virginia’s 45 games. The Cavaliers, ranked 11th nationally by Collegiate Baseball, have a 35-9-1 record, including a 13-8-1 mark in the ACC.
