Three Cavaliers Chosen in Second Day of MLB Draft

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Three Virginia baseball players were selected Wednesday in the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Andrew Carraway (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) was a 12th-round pick (353rd overall) of the Seattle Mariners. Jeff Lorick (Jr., Duluth, Ga.) was picked in the 20th round (598th overall) by the Atlanta Braves, while Robert Poutier (Sr., Yorktown, Va.) was a 29th-round selection (864th overall) of the San Diego Padres.

Carraway has gone 8-1 with a 4.13 ERA this season. He was named to National Pitcher of Year watch list, and opponents are batting just .236 against him this year, which is eighth-lowest in the ACC. He boasts a 19-4 career pitching record, and his .826 winning percentage currently is third best in school history. His next outing will be his 73rd career, which will make him fourth all-time at UVa. He also enters the College World Series with 235 career strikeouts, which is sixth in school history.

Carraway also has thrived in the classroom and outside of baseball. He lived on the Lawn at UVa this past year one of just 50 students to earn the honor this year at the University.

Lorick went 2-1 with a 5.61 ERA this year. He tossed 25.2 innings for Virginia this season.

Poutier has a 3-0 record with a 2.21 ERA this season. A team co-captain with Carraway, Poutier has pitched his most innings this year since his freshman season in 2005 (36.2 this year; 49.0 as freshman). He has 50 strikeouts in 36.2 innings this year, and batters are hitting .228 against him.
