CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID) released its 2009-10 Women’s Basketball University Division All-State Team on Wednesday (April 14), and Virginia senior guard Monica Wright was named the organization’s Player of the Year and to the first team.

Wright (Woodbridge, Va.), a 5-11 guard, was a first team All-America selection by the Associated Press, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). She was named the 2010 ACC Player of the Year, ACC Defensive Player of the Year and the WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year.

Wright averaged 23.7 points per game en route to the ACC scoring title for the second-consecutive season. She broke her own UVa single-season scoring record (734 points) this season, and became UVa’s all-time leading scorer with 2,540 career points.

She was drafted No. 2 overall, the highest draft pick in Virginia school history, by the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. Prior to heading to Lynx training camp, Wright will be a member of the USA Basketball Women’s Select Team from April 15-18 in Storrs and Hartford, Conn.

Joining Wright on the first team is Liberty’s Devon Brown, James Madison’s Dawn Evans and VCU’s D’Andra Moss and Kita Waller.

James Madison head coach Kenny Brooks was named the VaSID Coach of the Year, while Devon Brown was the Rookie of the Year.

This is Wright’s second-consecutive VaSID Player of the Year honor. Last season was named Co-State Player of the Year (along with Liberty’s Megan Frazee). She is a four-time All-State selection and was the organization’s Rookie of the Year in 2007.
