Brennan Schmidt
Graduate Assistant
Brennan Schmidt is in his first year in a non-coaching graduate assistant position this season.

Schmidt was a rare four-year starter and two-time captain (2004, ’05) at UVa from 2002-2005. He was the first play- er in school history to start 50 games, finishing with 51 career starts. At the conclusion of his career in 2005, that mark tied for an ACC record for most career starts with NC State quarterback Philip Rivers and Maryland guard C.J. Brooks, and tied with former Ohio State nose guard Luke Fickell (1993-96) for most starts by a defensive lineman in FBS history.

He amassed 290 career tackles, ranking fourth all-time in UVa history by a defensive lineman. Schmidt is one of seven players in UVa history to start four bowl games and his 87 tackles in 2002 are the most by a freshman lineman in school history.

After he was finished at UVa, Schmidt signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets. In 2007 he played in the NFL Europe for the Rhein Fire.

The past two seasons Schmidt was the head coach, and only coach, for the Napoli Briganti in Naples, Italy. He led the 2007 squad to a 7-0 record and champions of the Italian Super Bowl.

A native of McLean, Va., Schmidt graduated from UVa with a degree in sociology in 2005.
