Selenski Named Semifinalist for Honda Award

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior field hockey player Paige Selenski has been named one of four semifinalists for the 2010 Honda Award for field hockey, given annually to the nation’s top player.
The winner of the Honda Award for field hockey will be decided by nationwide voting among NCAA member schools and will become a nominee for The Honda-Broderick Cup, an award given annually to the nation’s outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year. In addition to the honor of this selection, American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women’s athletic fund of each nominee’s university, while the winner’s program will receive $5,000.
The three other nominees include Maryland’s Katie O’Donnell, Princeton’s Kathleen Sharkey and Connecticut’s Melissa Gonzalez. Selenski is a semifinalist for the second consecutive year.
“There is no surprise that Paige is recognized as one of America’s top collegiate athletes,” head coach Michele Madison said. “Every day she excels modestly at what she was born to do. The entire team holds Paige in high regard for how she trains and all the extra work she puts in. Paige and her teammates push each other in their uncompromised pursuit of excellence and from this the team will achieve greatness.”
Selenski, a native of Shavertown, Pa., helped Virginia to its second straight appearance in the NCAA semifinals. She notched her fourth career hat trick in Virginia’s 4-3 overtime loss to North Carolina in that game.
Selenski led the Cavaliers with 27 goals, including seven game-winners, which was tied for first among conference players. She also contributed eight assists for a team-best 62 points and was named a first-team All-American, first-team all-south region, and an All-ACC selection in 2010.
Now in its 35th year, the Collegiate Women Sports Award program recognizes annually the top woman collegiate athlete in the 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports, each of whom receives the Honda Sports Award. In addition, each year, a single athlete from the group of 12 Honda Sports Award winners is chosen as the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and is presented with the Honda-Broderick Cup.
Selenski is Virginia’s only field hockey semifinalist since the award began in 1984.
Former women’s basketball player Dawn Staley is the lone Cavalier to have won the Honda-Broderick Cup, doing so in 1991.
