Story Links
Athens, GA – The seventh-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is tied for sixth place following Friday’s opening round of play at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Club. The tournament is using a best ball format with all five competitors from each school playing together as opposed to seeded players from three or four teams playing in groups.
Virginia’s players combined to shoot 6-over 294. Purdue leads the 23-team field at 4-under 284 while Alabama is second at 2-under 286.
While a best ball format is being used to determine the team score, traditional stroke play is in place for the individual competition. UVa’s Calle Nielson led the Cavaliers with a 2-over 74 to stand 12th overall. Brittany Altomare and Eleana Collins are tied for 20th at 75. Collins is competing as a non-scoring individual. Joy Kim is in 30th place at 76 while Nicole Agnello and Portland Rosen both carded 78s to tie for 59th place.
Duke’s Aleja Cangrejo and Florida State’s Hannah Thomson lead the field at 2-under 70.
The second round of the tournament takes place Saturday and the final round is slated for Sunday.
