Virginia Swimmers Fare Well at Charlotte UltraSwim

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swimming teams competed at the Charlotte UltraSwim over the weekend, highlighted by three finalists among a field of Olympians and national champions. The USA Swimming Grand Prix event was held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Charlotte native Scot Robison, who completed his eligibility with the Cavaliers this spring, placed second overall in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 49.90. A current member of the U.S. national team, he was the top seed in the field after the preliminary session. Robison also swam in the consolation final of both the 50-meter freestyle (23.45) and 200-meter freestyle (1:51.88) where he finished ninth and 14th, respectively.
Lauren Perdue, the 2011 ACC Swimmer of the Year as a sophomore, finaled in the 100-meter freestyle and took seventh overall, touching in 56.06. Perdue, a native of Greenville, N.C., also competed in the consolation final of both the 200-meter freestyle, where she finished 10th in 2:00.58, and the 50-meter freestyle, where she placed 12th in 26.20.
U.S. national team member Rachel Naurath was a top-8 finalist in two events. She took seventh in a timed final of the 800-meter freestyle with a mark of 8:50.98. She also finaled in the 200-meter butterfly, taking seventh overall with a time of 2:15.85. Naurath, who hails from Manakin-Sabot, Va., was a bit faster in the preliminaries, clocking a time of 2:15.83. She also placed 15th (4:23.42) in the 400-meter freestyle, swimming in the consolation final.
Virginia co-captain Peter Geissinger made the consolation final of both the 100-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle. The Darien, Conn., native won the B final of the 100-meter butterfly in 54.60 to finish ninth overall. He also took 15th in the 50-meter freestyle with a mark of 23.96 after touching in 23.83 during the morning session. Geissinger went on to win the C final of the 100-meter freestyle to place 17th in 51.47.
Nick Montes de Oca, who hails from Orange, Va., reached the consolation final of two events – the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley. He was 15th in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:10.93 and 17th in the 400-meter IM with a mark of 4:33.74.
