Virginia Qualifies Three Cavaliers to Next Round at USA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Senior All-American Stephanie Garcia and sophomore NCAA Champion Robby Andrews advanced to the finals of the steeplechase and the 800m, respectively, at the 2011 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday, while freshman Vanessa Fabrizio qualified for the finals of the 800m at the junior national championships.
Andrews qualified for Sunday’s eight-personal final of the 800m by finishing third in his heat with a time of 1:49.25. The top-three finishers on Sunday will advance to the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea on Aug. 27-Sept. 4.
Garcia also has a chance to compete for a spot on Team USA at the World Championships, as she finished fourth in her heat of the steeplechase in 9:55.50. She will be among the final 14 competitors in Sunday’s finals, set to race at 4:45 p.m. ET.
In the junior championships, Fabrizio finished runner-up in the 800m with a time of 2:09.82 to advance to the finals. The top-two finishers of Saturday’s finals (8:40 p.m. ET) will qualify to represent Team USA at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships on July 22-24 in Miramar, Fla.
In other senior championship events today, junior All-American Lance Roller finished the semifinals of the 800m with a season-best time of 1:47.30. Senior All-American Adams Abdulrazaaq took 24th in the 110m hurdles in 13.88 and senior All-American Ayla Smith took 12th in the 400m hurdle semifinals. Smith crossed the line in 57.31.
In the javelin, junior All-American Andy Fahringer finished 12th with a throw of 229′ 11″.
Virginia will continue competition tomorrow, with three Cavaliers competing in the finals of the junior championship. Freshman Colin Mearns will race in the steeplechase at 4:45 p.m. ET. Fabrizio will race the 800m at 8:30 p.m., and classmate Kathleen Stevens will run 3000m at 9:40 p.m. ET.
