CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior guard Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) was named to the five-player ACC All-Defensive team, the conference announced on Wednesday (Feb. 29).
Heading into the 2012 ACC Tournament, Gerson ranks second in the conference and 16th in the nation in steals per game (3.1). She has posted at least four steals in 15 games this season.
Gerson has flourished in head coach Joanne Boyle’s defensive scheme, helping the Cavaliers to lead the ACC and rank 24th in the nation in scoring defense (53.3 points per game). Virginia has tied a single-season program-best by limiting 22 opponents to fewer than 60 points in 2011-12.
Gerson has started 18 of the Cavaliers’ 30 games and adds 8.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. She has a team-high 93 steals.
It is the first All-ACC honor of Gerson’s career. She joins Monica Wright (2010 All-Defensive Team and ACC Defensive Player of the Year, 2008 All-Defensive Team), LaTonya Blue (2004 and 2005 All-Defensive Team) and Renee Robinson (2000 All-Defensive Team) as Virginia’s all-time defensive honorees.
The Cavaliers have won three-straight games to conclude the regular season and are seeded sixth at the 2012 ACC Tournament. Virginia faces 11th-seeded Boston College on Thursday (March 1) in the first round of the conference championship.
