Brett Sickler Named Rowing Assistant Coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Brett Sickler has been named an assistant coach for the Virginia rowing program, head coach Kevin Sauer announced Thursday (Aug. 9).

“I am ecstatic that Brett has joined the Virginia program,” Sauer said. “I have known Brett since I recruited her out of high school over 10 years ago and have watched her incredible rowing career as a world champion and how she has handled herself as a coach. Her passion and energy, coupled with her knowledge and integrity will be a great fit for UVa.”

Sickler served as the lead assistant for her alma mater, Michigan, the past three years and helped guide the Wolverines to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships and their first Big Ten title in eight years in 2012. She oversaw the recruiting efforts for the Wolverines and led the novice program.

“I could not be more excited to join the University of Virginia women’s rowing program,” Sickler said. “I have always had a tremendous amount of respect for Kevin and the program he has built and I’m looking forward to working with him to continue Virginia’s success. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my coaching career at such a high quality university and rowing program.”

Sickler is a three-time member of the USRowing senior national team and won gold medals with the women’s eight at the 2006 and 2007 World Rowing Championships. She also finished 12th in the women’s double sculls at the 2006 world regatta and was a Team USA alternate for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

A 2005 graduate of Michigan, Sickler helped the varsity eight earn a second-place finish at the 2003 NCAA Championships and a bronze medal at the 2004 national regatta.
