Four with UVa Ties Set to Open Play at U.S. Amateur

Cherry Hills Village, Colo. – Starting Monday a group of four players with Virginia ties open play at the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship Monday in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. The group includes UVa head men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent, sophomore Denny McCarthy, incoming freshmen Nick McLaughlin and recent graduate Cory Siegfried.

The tournament features 36 holes of stroke play Monday and Tuesday before the field is reduced to 64 players for match play, which runs through Sunday, Aug. 19.

The opening two rounds will be contested at two venues. In addition to the Cherry Hills Country Club (par 71, 7,432 yards) course, players will also compete at Common Ground Golf Course (par 70, 7,351 yards). All match play will take place at Cherry Hills, which is hosting a USGA championship for the ninth time. It was the site of the 1938, 1960 and 1978 U.S. Open Championships.

The four Cavaliers advanced to the national championship through sectional qualifying tournaments held between July 9 and Aug. 1. A total of 312 players will compete at this year’s event. This will mark the third time McCarthy and Sargent have played at the U.S. Amateur.

Siegfried will tee off at 7:20 a.m. from the No. 10 tee at Cherry Hills. McLaughlin goes off at 7:30 a.m. from No. 10 at Common Grounds. Sargent begins play at 8 a.m. from Cherry Hills No. 1 and McCarthy follows him 30 minutes later from the first tee.

Sargent tied for first at the qualifier held at the University of Maryland Golf Course. McLaughlin won the event at the TPC River Highland Course in Cromwell, Conn. McCarthy finished first at Woodholme Country Club in Pikesville, Md. Siegfried was fourth at the tournament contested at the Applebrook Golf Club and Waynesborough Country Club in Malvern, Pa.
