Volleyball Falls at Colorado State, 3-0, in Season Opener

FORT COLLINS, Colo.–The Virginia volleyball team opened the 2012 season Friday (Aug. 24), but fell to Colorado State on the first day of the Rocky Mountain Invite, 25-18, 25-13 and 25-20, before 3,957 at Moby Arena.
UVa was led by sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.), who recorded 10 assists and seven kills. Senior Rachel Gray (Shawnee, Kan.) led the team with 14 assists, while freshman Vivian Burcescu (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) also tallied seven kills. Junior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the team with 10 digs.
In the first set, the Rams were up 15-9 before the Cavaliers went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 16, but CSU followed with a 9-2 run to win, 25-18.
The Rams took the second set, 25-13, hitting .400 with 15 kills against only three errors.
In the third set which saw six ties, CSU broke a 19-19 tie with a couple kills and finished the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-20.
The Cavaliers (0-1) were outhit by the Rams (1-0), .267-.001, and had 12 fewer kills (39-27). Colorado State was led by Kelsey Snider, who recorded nine kills, and Deedra Foss, who tallied 32 assists.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (Aug. 25) in the final day of the Rocky Mountain Invite against Rhode Island and Denver at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern.
