CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team dropped its 2012 home opener Friday night (Aug. 31), falling to Western Kentucky, 3-1, at Memorial Gymnasium on the first day of the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup.
The Cavaliers (1-3) were led by sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.), who was one dig shy of a triple-double, earning 19 assists, 10 kills and nine digs. The last triple double for UVa was Jenny Harmon, who had 11 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks on Oct. 10, 2000 against Liberty.
Freshman Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) led the team with 11 kills, while junior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) added 17 digs. The match marked first-year head coach Dennis Hohenshelt‘s first home match at UVa.
The Hilltoppers (3-2) were led by setter Melanie Stutsman, who had 37 assists and 10 digs, while Heather Boyan hit .471 with nine kills and 12 blocks.
WKU won the blocking battle, 15-6, and minimized errors, only hitting 17, while the Cavaliers had 35.
In the first set, UVa lead 22-18, but the Hilltoppers stormed back with four points in a row to tie at 22. The Cavaliers used two hitting errors and an O’Shoney kill to win the first frame, 25-22.
In the second set, WKU hit. 348 to the Cavaliers’ .048 and used a 7-2 run to open the frame on its way to a 25-15 win.
The Hilltoppers took the third set, 25-14, with 18 kills to UVa’s nine. In the fourth frame, WKU held UVa to a -.075 hitting percentage en route to a 25-16 victory.
In the first match of the tournament, Delaware defeated Lehigh, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21.
Saturday’s Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup action starts at 11 a.m., as Delaware faces Western Kentucky. Virginia plays Lehigh at 1 p.m. In the night session, Lehigh takes on Western Kentucky at 5 p.m., while the Cavaliers play in the final match at 7 p.m., against Delaware.
Fans attending the football game vs. Richmond can bring their ticket stubs and earn free admission to the Cavaliers match against Delaware (subject to availability).
