RICHMOND, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team defeated Appalachian State, 3-0, Saturday (Sept. 8) after falling earlier in the day to Georgetown, 3-0, on the final day of the VCU Third Degree Sportswear Invitational.
The Cavaliers (3-3) hit 17 more kills (43-26), seven more service aces (8-1) and five more blocks (12-6) on their way to a 25-18, 25-21, 25-20 win over Appalachian State (2-8).
Sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) hit .296 with 13 kills and 16 assists, while adding eight digs, three service aces and three blocks to lead UVa. She was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
Freshman Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) led the squad with a .370 hitting percentage and 12 kills, while sophomore Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) had a career high seven blocks.
In the first match of the day, Georgetown hit .223 to Virginia’s .134 as the Hoyas defeated the Cavaliers, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21.
The Hoyas had 21 more digs (60-39) and hit 14 more kills than UVa, (45-31). Virginia also hit seven service errors to Georgetown’s two.
Freshman Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) led the squad with nine kills, while junior captain Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led the team with 13 digs.
Janowski had 20 assists and eight digs in her first match after earning a triple-double against VCU Friday night.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend when they host the Marriott Cavalier Classic. UVa begins ACC play when they host Virginia Tech Friday (Sept. 14) at 7 p.m., before playing Liberty on Saturday (Sept. 15) at 7 p.m.
