Women's Tennis Has Strong Day Two at UVa Fall Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team continued play in its first tournament of the year with a strong second day at the UVa Fall Classic on Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers had players advance to the final of one doubles and two singles flights while going unbeaten on the day.
Virginia went undefeated in singles, going 6-0 on the day. In the two top singles flights, the Cavaliers had a player advance to the final. In the A-1 flight, first-year Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) remained unbeaten in her first collegiate tournament. She posted a 6-1, 6-2 semifinal win over Andressa Garcia of Winthrop and will play top-seeded Jaklin Alawi of South Carolina in the final. Senior Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) reached the A-2 final with a 6-4, 3-0 ret. Victory over Yasmine Alkema of Winthrop. She will play Sali Kvitashvili of VCU in the final.
Four other Cavaliers, Li Xi (Kunming, China), Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) each won their backdraw matches.
In the A flight of doubles, the team of Xi and Nauta won a pair of matches to reach the final. The duo downed Tooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead of UNC Greensboro 8-5 in the quarterfinals and Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova of Marshall 8-4 in the semifinals. They will play Kathryn Talbert and Kasey Gardiner of Wake Forest in the final. Two other teams won a pair of backdraw matches as the Cavaliers went undefeated in doubles on the day.
Play on the final day of the UVa Fall Classic begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center and admission is free. Fans attending the tournament can park for free at the Culbreth Garage.
