Styslinger Advances in ITA All-American Qualifying

TULSA, Okla. – The Virginia men’s tennis team continued play at ITA All-American Championships on Monday as the qualifying singles got underway at the Case Tennis Center.

First-year Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) won his debut at the event with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Thai Tu of San Francisco. He will play No. 28 seed Jonathan Brooklyn of Hawaii in the second round on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers had five players in the 128-player draw, each looking to win three matches over the next three days to reach the main draw. However, Styslinger was the only player to advance to the second round.

Junior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) was the top seed in qualifying, but fell in the first round to Julian Lenz of Baylor 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.), who received a lucky loser spot in qualifying after losing in the final round of pre-qualifying, suffered a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 loss to Duke’s Michael Redlicki on Monday. Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Dane Webb of Oklahoma, the No. 4 seed in the draw. Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), who reached the qualifying draw with three wins in pre-qualifying, suffered his first loss of the fall, falling 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 to No. 26 seed Anis Ghorbel of Drake.

In addition to the second round of singles qualifying, Tuesday also features the start of doubles qualifying, with two Cavalier teams in the draw. Styslinger will team with Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) as the duo meet the San Francisco pair of Will Schumacher and Tu. Ryan Shane and Jonathan Cornish (London, England) open play in the qualifying draw against Clemson’s Austin Ansari and Hunter Harrington.
