LOS ANGELES – Virginia women’s tennis first-year Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) continued her strong play at the ITA All-American championships during the first day of main draw action at the Riviera Country Club.
Elbaba, who reached the main draw with six wins in pre-qualifying and qualifying, took out top-seeded Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar of Texas A&M 6-4, 6-1, in the first round. Sanchez-Quintanar, the nation’s No. 4 ranked player who reached last year’s NCAA singles quarterfinals, is the fourth ranked opponent Elbaba has defeated this week.
Elbaba will meet fellow freshman Danielle Collins of Florida in the round of 16 on Friday. Collins also reached the main draw by advancing from both pre-qualifying and qualifying.
