CLEMSON, S.C.–The Virginia volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Clemson, 26-24, 25-14, 25-18, Friday night at Jervey Gymnasium in Clemson, S.C.
Clemson (11-6, 2-4 ACC) hit .219 with 13 blocks, while the Cavaliers (5-11, 0-6 ACC) had nine blocks and a .051 hitting percentage.
The Cavaliers were led by junior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.), who tallied 20 digs, and freshman Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.), who earned eight kills and 12 digs.
Two more freshmen, Vivian Burcescu (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) added nine and eight kills, respectively.
In the first set, the Tigers led 16-10, but the Cavaliers fought back to tie the frame at 20. Clemson pulled off two points to lead 22-20 and force a UVa timeout. Out of the break, Virginia scored three points in a row to lead, 23-22, but Clemson came back to earn a set point that the Cavaliers fought off. UVa committed a service error followed by a hitting error to give Clemson the first set, 26-24.
After the second set was tied at nine, Clemson went on a 6-0 run on the way to a 25-14 win. In the third set, the Tigers hit .278 with 13 kills and only three errors en route to a 25-19 victory.
The Tigers were led by Serenat Yaz, who hit eight kills and recorded 16 digs, and Hannah Brenner, who tallied 28 assists with seven digs and four kills.
Up next, the Cavaliers play at Georgia Tech on Saturday night (Oct. 6) at 7 p.m.
