Players from 17 teams were in action Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center as play began at the 11th annual UVa Fall Classic.
CHARLOTTESVILLE – Play began Friday at the 11th annual UVa Fall Classic at the Snyder Tennis Center. Virginia had four singles players and two doubles teams advance to flight semifinals during the first day of action.
The Cavaliers have a player in the semifinals of four of the six singles flights. Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala), the top seed in Orange Doubles, advanced with a quarterfinal win over Zack Lewis of College of Charleston after a first round bye. Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) is the top seed in White Singles and used a bye and a win over Scott Huang of William & Mary to reach the semifinals. Jonathan Cornish, seeded No. 4 in Gold Singles, had a pair of straight sets over Sergio Maurelo of Liberty and Duwane Thomas of Morgan State. Mitchell Polnet (Churchville, Penn.) advanced in Red Singles, where he is the No. 2 seed, with wins over Billy Kenny of College of Charleston and Francis Pare of VCU.
Shane and Uriguen, the top seed in Blue Doubles, advanced to semifinals with a bye. In Orange Doubles, second-seeded Polnet and Cornish advanced with an 8-3 win over a team from Liberty.
Play continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. Admission is free.
