CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team won the first set against NC State, but fell 27-25, 19-25, 23-25, 21-25 Friday night (Oct. 13) at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Cavaliers (5-14, 0-9 ACC) had three hitters with double-digit kills, including senior Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas) who led the squad with 13 kills, and freshmen Vivian Burcescu (Cordtlant Manor, N.Y.) and Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.), who had 11 each.
The score was tied at 12 in the first set, but NC State (16-3, 6-2 ACC) went on a 7-2 run to lead 19-14. The Wolfpack led 23-20, before a Burcescu kill and a Virginia block cut the lead to one, 23-22, and force a timeout.
Out of the timeout, freshman Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit a kill to tie the frame at 23. UVa then fought off two set points before taking the set 27-25, the final two points coming on NC State errors.
In the second set, NC State hit .212 while holding UVa to a -.056 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-19 win.
The Wolfpack were down 20-14 in the third, but stormed back to win 25-23. In the fourth, the score was tied at 19 apiece, but NC State pulled off six of the next eight points to win, 25-21.
Dariyan Hopper and Alesha Wilson led NC State with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
