Two Singles Players, Doubles Teams Advance at ITA Atlantic Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team had two singles players and two doubles teams advance at the ITA Atlantic Regional during Sunday’s play at the Snyder Tennis Center.
Play started Sunday with the round of 16 of singles, with Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) and Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) advancing to the quarterfinals. Jenkins, the top seed, downed 17-32 seed Bryan Welnetz of Penn State 7-5, 7-6(2). Richmond, the No. 7 seed, rallied for a 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1 win over Hunter Koontz of Virginia Tech. Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.), the No. 3 seed, and Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), the No. 6 seed, were both upset in the round of 16.
In doubles, Virginia had two teams advance to the semifinals with a pair of wins. The top seeded duo of Richmond and Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) topped Jimmy Davis and Scott Keaton of George Mason 8-6 in the round of 16 and Carlos Lopez-Villa and Albert Ochagavia of Old Dominion 8-3 in the quarterfinals.
Second-seeded Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) reached the semifinals with an 8-4 win of Jesse Feder and Paul Nahon of Richmond and an 8-4 win over Jamie Whiteford and Ben Guthrie of William & Mary.
The tournament continues Monday with the quarterfinals and semifinals of singles and the round semifinals of doubles. Play begins at 10 a.m. and admission is free.
