Li Xi Reaches ITA Atlantic Regional Singles Final

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team will look to capture a pair of championships at the ITA Atlantic Regional after another strong performance on Monday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Li Xi (Kunming, China) reached the singles final, while a pair of Cavalier teams reached the doubles semifinals.
Xi, the No. 2 seed, set up a matchup with top-seeded Petra Januskova of Penn State with a pair of wins on Monday. She posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Isel Martinez-Marcos of Virginia Tech in quarterfinals before downing teammate Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) 7-6(5), 6-1 in the semifinals. Vierra had topped another Cavalier, Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.), in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-1.
No. 3 seed Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) defeated Raluca Mita of Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals before falling to Januskova in the semifinals. Januskova opened the day with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Virginia’s Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.)
In doubles, both Virginia teams in the quarterfinals advanced to the semifinals. The second-seeded team of Nauta and Xi downed eighth-seeded Josefin Hjertquist and Olga Barsheheuska of VCU 8-2. The seventh-seeded pair of Epstein and Vierra upset the No. 1 seed, Penn State’s Januskova and Chelsea Utting, 8-6.
The tournament concludes Monday on the campus of Virginia Tech with the semifinals of doubles, followed by the singles final and doubles final.
