Virginia Opens Season with Sweep of Navy

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the 2012-13 season Friday afternoon (Oct. 26) with a sweep of Navy at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The men defeated the Midshipmen 162-124, while the women were victorious, 168-118.
Virginia posted the top marks in all 32 events contested. On the women’s side, the Cavaliers went at least 1-2-3-4 in 11 events, while the men had at least the top three finishers in six events.
“I’m really pleased with how we’ve begun the season,” head coach Mark Bernardino said. “Our first-year athletes have brought a powerful work ethic and strong determination with them and they have raised the energy level and effort in the practice pool on a daily basis. We’re certainly a lot further ahead of where were at this junction last year. It was a total team performance with a lot of team energy and spirit.”
Junior Rachel Naurath picked up three event wins, while seniors Lauren Perdue, Brady Fox and Tom Barrett, sophomore David Ingraham and freshman Courtney Bartholomew all notched two individual wins.
In the women’s 1,000 free, sophomore Kelly Offutt led the Cavaliers to a 1-2-3-4-5 finish in 9:51.69. Junior Brad Phillips placed first in the men’s 1,000 free in 9:07.98, while junior Jan Daniec (9:14.35) touched second.
Naurath (1:47.76) took first in the women’s 200 free, while junior Parker Camp (1:39.14) just out-touched freshman Nick Alexiou (1:39.35) to win the men’s 200 free.
Bartholomew finished first in the women’s 100 back in 53.91 in her debut individual swim for UVa, which ranks eighth on UVa’s all-time list. Senior Brady Fox (49.61) and freshman Luke Papendick (49.91) notched first and second-place marks in the men’s 100 back.
Two freshmen took the honors in the 100 breast, as Natalie Martin won the women’s in 1:06.25, while Yannick Kaeser (56.26) claimed the men’s race.
Naurath picked up her second victory in the women’s 200 fly, finishing in 1:58.30. Ingrahamnotched a win in the men’s 200 fly in 1:48.89.
In the 50 free, Perdue led a UVa 1-2-3-4 sweep in 22.59, while Barrett claimed the men’s 50 in 20.43.
Perdue returned to win the women’s 100 free (49.67), while Barrett picked up a win in the men’s 100 free (45.17).
Bartholomew won her second event of the day in the women’s 200 back in 1:57.06, 10th on UVa’s all-time list. Fox also swept the men’s back events, winning the 200 in 1:47.77.
Senior Christine Olson touched first in the women’s 200 breast in 2:21.03, while in the men’s 200 breast, junior Taylor Grey won in a time of 2:01.17.
The Cavaliers went 1-2-3-4 in the women’s 500 free, with Naurath winning her third event in 4:48.52. Phillips finished his distance sweep, taking the men’s 500 free in 4:27.37.
In the women’s 100 fly, sophomore Shaun Casey claimed the title in 55.36, while senior Matt Murray touched first in the men’s 100 fly in 50.11.
Sophomore Ellen Williamson won the women’s 200 IM in 2:01.20, while on the men’s side, Ingraham touched first on the men’s side in 1:51.93.
The Cavalier women won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.14 and the 400 free relay in a time of 3:26.84, while the men claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:30.89 and the 400 free relay in 3:03.10
On the diving boards, freshmen Carl Buergler and Becca Corbett broke the school records for the men’s 3-meter (377.85) and the women’s 1-meter (301.42), respectively.
In the first events of the day, the Cavalier women went 1-2-3-4 on the 3-meter diving boards, while the men claimed first and second on the 1-meter boards. Corbett won the women’s with a total score of 295.43, while Buergler claimed the men’s crown with 350.55.
“Today the divers all stepped up for their first meet,” diving coach Rich MacDonald said. “I was extremely proud of how they competed. From top to bottom, they all did some great things. When this class of first-years committed, I believed that we had the potential to be the best diving program in school history. Today was a big step in that direction.”
Up next, the Cavaliers travel north to face Pittsburgh on Sunday (Oct. 28).
